Program Overview
According to the Book of Common Prayer deacons are “to interpret to the church the needs,
concerns and hopes of the world.”
The Whitaker School of Theology is committed to educating, equipping and empowering
deacons to do the ministry of Jesus Christ in the Diocese of Michigan.
The ‘pilot’ Deacon Formation Program has been developed in response to the new canons
of the National Church and from a growing clarification in the church’s understanding of who a deacon is and what a
deacon does.
The
three year program will include integrated classes on such topics as Theology, Church History, Anglicanism, Scripture, Ethics,
Book of Common Prayer, Homiletics, Spirituality as well as practical field education. In a Field Education
Practicum, a candidate will experience the life of a deacon first hand while being mentored by several qualified faculty members.

"Deacons are living icons of servant ministry.
While we all vow at our baptism to seek and serve Christ, Deacons take on the special mantle of being servants to all
God’s people.
They
are the bridge builders between the needs of the world and the Gospel message proclaimed by the Church.
Deacons
are an essential element in keeping the Church connected and accountable to living a Gospel mission."
The Right Reverend Wendell N.
Gibbs, Jr.
10th Bishop of Michigan
The
Whitaker School has a rich history of preparing the Deacons of the Episcopal Diocese of Michigan for the ministry to which
they feel called.
The School has prepared more than 100 deacons for the Church.
